Wimborne and District Riding Club is an adult riding club (for over 17's), which has been running for over 25 years and has approximately 250 members. Parents can be member on behalf of their children, although children can only enter events that specifically state so on their schedules.
We are lucky enough to rent our own field at Higher Merley Farm, just outside Wimborne. The field is very level, well drained and maintained with good access. We also have the use of the large all-weather arena at the farm, should ground conditions be unsuitable.
We run a variety of events, hopefully something for everybody... our largest is our open show held in July and has over the years proved very successful and allows us to purchase equipment, subsidise training sessions, have our own field and donate money raised at other events to charity. The years events include dressage, show jumping, in-hand & ridden shows, gymkhanas, regular jumping & flatwork clinics, a dog show and sponsored/social rides.
The club runs on a committee of 12, although help is always needed and very welcome to assist with setting up, running & clearing away after events. Events are informal & fun; no-one should feel unwelcome, out of place or "not up to it".
Over the years, WDRC has donated over £50,000 to charities and the committee is always open to suggestions for suitable (preferably local) beneficiaries.

"I have been a member of Wimborne and District Riding Club for over 20 years and this is my second time as Chairman. I have seen the Club grow from the days when there were about 100 members and the Club field was a small paddock cut in half by a ditch situated by Walford Bridge in Wimborne. Now we have in excess of 350 members and are extremely lucky to lease a fabulous field at Higher Merley Farm where we also have the use of a superb 60x30 all weather arena. I have lived in this area all my life and have had a lifelong love affair with horses, although I wasn’t lucky enough to own one until I was an adult. I currently own a Danish Warmblood called Mel, who is now in his mid twenties and retired, and a 9 year old Dutch Warmblood called Swing who is starting to excel at Dressage. As a teenager I loved to compete in Gymkhanas and in those days most horse shows held a variety of Gymkhana races as well as jumping and showing classes. I have also competed in Affiliated Show Jumping classes but more recently I have developed a passion for Dressage. Unfortunately my body isn’t as supple as it used to be due to a number of sporting injuries over the years so Swing is now being competed in BD events at Novice level by my instructor Louise Downing and I am involved behind the scenes. I actually quite enjoy this as I do not get so nervous as when I was competing myself. I live on a smallholding and when I am not involved with the horses, my other hobbies are gardening and rearing rare breed pigs. My life is always hectic but I very much enjoy running Club events and meeting all our members."

"I started riding Dolly at the age of 7, then got my first horse Girlie at the age of 12. She taught me a lot, after 13 happy years she sadly died at the grand age of 29. I then got an Irish draft mare who had lovely paces, but she was not a perfect match for me, after breaking my back in two places I decided to sell her to a more experience rider and bought myself a little piebald cob – Flint. I have never looked back. He is a true allrounder and we both enjoy partaking in a range of activities from dressage to Trec. My other passion is horse racing, my father owns both pointers and racehorses. I am also very lucky to have a very supportive husband Tom."

As the Membership Secretary, most of you would already have had some contact with me already. If you don't know me I'm also the dizzy one running some of the Evening Clear Round events and the Annual Fun Dog Show. I own a cheeky New Forest X pony called Harvey who at 19 years of age still acts like a loveable rogue and am often seen hacking around Corfe Mullen with my faithfull black and tan terrier cross called Tillie at our heels. I hope that you enjoy looking around our much improved website and if you have any questions relating to old or new memberships, please conatct me.

"I joined the WDRC thirty years ago when the club was in it's infancy and my horse, Folly, was a yearling. During this time I have had tremendous fun andgained lots of invaluable experience, made many friends and gained plenty of knowledge. Folly and I are both still going although much more quietly these days - she hacks out three or four times a week, and I do "sit on and steer"! I very much enjoy being involved with the club, running events andhelping with others, especially when I meet up with some of our originalmembers, their children and grandchildren!"

"I was born and bred in Poole and although living abroad for some years returned to my roots in the mid 1990s. On arriving home I bought Amber my New Forest mare and joined the WDRC. We have been competing with the clubnow for almost 12 years and enjoy every discipline, well I say we, I do and Amber usually comes along to prove a point! As Amber is getting along in years we have a new addition, Manyana, a WelshC. I backed him last year and have shown him in hand over the last couple ofyears. This year we had our debut under saddle and contrary to my belief that we may indeed explode when everyone was asked to "canter round" hebehaved beautifully. I am hoping for as many happy ears with him as I have been lucky to have with Amber. I really enjoy the WDRC with the sheer quantity and quality of events and the friendliness and helpfulness of the club members. I have been encouraged to have a go at everything and anything, from gymkhanas to dressage; and I have learnt so much. This year I wanted to give a little back and so joined the committee and would really encourage members to do the same."

I started riding at the age of 3, and have been involved with horses in some capacity or another, since then. When I was aged 6 I moved to Saudi Arabia, for 4 years (as my Dad was in the Army), and was lucky enough to experience riding desert bred Arabs, in their natural environment. When I was 16, I started riding injured racehorses for a friend of mine, and what I lacked in technique, I made up for in stick-ability!
I bought Rolo in 2008, as 17.3h, underweight, bald, odd looking, ginger giraffe (technically ID X TB!), who would go backwards at 100 miles an hour for no particular reason, and I wondered what I had done. However, he has turned into an absolute angel, and tries his best for me, regardless of how nervous he is, or indeed, I am. We started Dressage last year, and did some showing classes and hope to continue to build on our confidence going forward.
